Write It Out
I live in Porto
Alegre, Brazil. Brazil is in South
America. Porto Alegre is in the
extreme south, very close to Uruguay
and Paraguay. They are also in South
America.
Porto Alegre is
a very large city, so the people
there work in different kinds of
organizations or businesses, like
shops, banks, restaurants, hotels, schools, or government
offices. Everywhere you go, people
are busy. The streetcars fill up
fast to take passengers to different
places without having to deal with
the car or bus traffic in the
streets. Brazilians speak
Portuguese, but in Porto Alegre,
many residents are immigrants from
Germany, Poland, Russia and other
parts of Europe and even Asia. They
speak Portuguese but they also speak
their native languages.
Porto Alegre is
famous for its restaurants, which serve
food from all over the world. The
most popular restaurants are "churrascarias."
They serve many types of barbequed
meats with black beans and varied
salads. Residents and visitors also
enjoy the wide Rio Guaiba, a big river running through
the city. Families love to
fish and boat on the river when they
can get away. The city is also not
far from the Atlantic ocean, so many
people get away to spend time on the
beaches swimming and playing
volleyball on the sand.
I really love
Porto Alegre because it has so many
things to do. However, I wish the
winters were not so cold and wet.
Then I could enjoy the outdoors all
year long!
What title would you give this
passage?
How was the writing organized? What
subtitles could you give to the two
middle parts?
Why do you think the word "churrascarias"
in quotes (")?
