On Using Explorer 7 -
Problems with Access
From Kathy - Help! I have had 2
sign up for the Distance Learning Program and had to
go to their homes to help get the disk running. Both
of them had SKYWERX (the non dial up connection).
One, I was able to get running on his mom's
laptop, the other is a mystery. A message comes up
regarding "Authoware" installment? Does anyone have
any ideas?

Tech Support
- Hi Leecy,
Thank you for
contacting us again regarding GEDOL.
The Authorware
error that the teacher was receiving; was it
during installation or when the program was
starting? Does the teacher know what version of
Internet Explorer the student had installed on
the computer?
If the error
came up after installation, please follow the
steps in the attached Word document. The ABC
file that is also attached will be explained in
the Word document steps.
Thank you.

From
Charlie - I had the same problem that Kathy reported. I
followed the steps in the email from McGraw Hill tech
support but still had problems. I called the tech
support number and received good, prompt help from a
knowledgeable person. A "patch" has to be applied
anytime the computer is running Internet Explorer
version 7. The tech. guy advised me to give students
the tech support number when I send them home with a
disk because apparently there are a number of glitches
that can come up.
Here's what I figured out
with the help of the wonderful people at the tech
support hotline. I opened the email that was sent from
tech support, via Leecy I think see below. It had an
attachment that is a program which applies a "patch" to
allow the program to run with Internet Explorer 7. I
will forward that email to you. Click on the attachment
that ends with .abc. Save that program to the desktop.
Right click on the newly created desktop icon and choose
"rename." Change the name to end with .exe instead of .abc.
Click on the icon again to run the program. Your
problem should be fixed.
After doing this process a few times on Thursday and
Friday, I had another tech problem. I launched GED
Online. It would act like it was going to open and then
disappear after about 20 seconds . . . another call to
tech support. They sent me to www.mhclearning.com,
which opens the exact same page that you always use to
log in. So on that particular computer, that's how the
student will always log on, by going to the website.
You still have to install the software and the patch (if
Explorer 7) in order to log on from the website.

From Mark -I spent some
time talking with tech support and came up with a
solution to the problem. Computers that are using
Windows Internet Explore 7 need to download a patch.
The other download that required changing the extension
name will fail some of the time. When the extension
name is changed something is corrupting the program
causing it to not install. I attached the directions and
put a copy of the e-mail from tech support. (
